Automated machines have several basic components, which this page outlines. In hardware, we deal with computational units, sensors, and actuators. The computational unit currently supported by AE is the Arduino Leonardo(TM) microcontroller. This is a simple computer that will execute the software you design. The sensors (yellow) and actuators (teal) form inputs and outputs to the computational unit, respectively, and are built by littleBits(TM) and have a magnetic attachment that makes the hardware snap together easily. At AE, we align the software to these elements through sense and action primitives (yellow and teal in the figure below, respectively).
